Lilac Photorealism Workshop

Step into the world of photorealistic watercolor as we create this stunning lilac bouquet filled with glowing color, delicate texture, reflective glass, and soft atmospheric background work. This two-week workshop is designed for students ready to slow down, observe deeply, and learn the techniques that transform watercolor from “painting flowers” into creating believable light, depth, and realism.

Together, we’ll break this painting down into approachable stages — from strong foundational blocking and value mapping to intricate floral texture and transparent glass effects. You’ll learn how to simplify overwhelming reference material while still capturing the lush, layered beauty of lilacs.

Topics covered include:

  • Masking fluid techniques for preserving highlights and detail
  • Water refraction and distortion through glass
  • Background work to create softness and depth without distraction
  • Blocking in large shapes and values before detail work
  • Building believable floral texture without overworking
  • Layering transparent watercolor for luminosity and dimension
  • Controlling edges: soft vs. crisp transitions
  • Creating depth through color temperature and value shifts
  • Brush control for tiny clustered blossoms and leaves
  • Techniques for avoiding muddiness while working in multiple layers
  • Final detailing and refinement for a polished photorealistic finish

This workshop is perfect for intermediate watercolor painters looking to strengthen realism skills, improve watercolor control, and gain confidence tackling complex reference photos. Students will leave with not only a finished painting, but a deeper understanding of how to approach highly detailed watercolor work in a manageable, thoughtful way.

Because sometimes the magic isn’t in painting every flower individually — it’s learning how to make the eye believe you did.

*Intro to Watercolor, Watercolor 101, and/or Botanicals highly encouraged before attending this workshop*
