3 Week Watercolor Workshop: Florals & Botanicals
Love florals but feel like yours always end up looking flat, muddy, or just… not quite right? This 3-week workshop is designed to help you build confidence painting flowers and greenery while learning the techniques that create depth, softness, and beautiful botanical paintings.
Over three weeks, we’ll work from live plants, practice foundational techniques, explore depth and layering, and create multiple finished paintings while learning how to avoid some of the most common floral painting mistakes.
This workshop is beginner friendly but also perfect for watercolorists wanting to create more intentional, polished florals.
Week 1: Leaves, Greenery & Color Matching
Florals begin long before petals.
In week one, we’ll focus on one of the most overlooked watercolor skills: learning to truly see color.
You’ll learn:
• How to match watercolor paint colors to live plants and greenery
• Single brushstroke leaves and petals
• How brush angle and pressure create different botanical shapes
• Creating believable greenery without overworking
Final Project: A finished greenery-focused botanical painting
Week 2: Creating Depth in Florals
This week we focus on creating flowers that feel soft, dimensional, and intentional.
You’ll learn:
• How to build depth and structure into floral paintings
• The common mistakes that make flowers feel flat or unintentional
• Layering and shape techniques for more realistic floral forms
• A surprisingly simple approach to painting beautiful watercolor wreaths
Final Project: A finished floral wreath painting
Week 3: Wildflowers, Backgrounds & Common Mistakes
Wildflowers are often deceptively difficult because “simple” can quickly become chaotic.
You’ll learn:
• How to create soft, believable wildflowers
• Background techniques that support rather than overpower your florals
• Value studies and why they matter more than most watercolorists realize
• Common floral mistakes and how to avoid them
Final Project: A finished wildflower painting with background elements
